Largest Knit Sculpture

If you first look at this picture, you just see a large bunny-like creature. But then you notice that there are people in the picture too!

This world record for the largest knit sculpture was earned in Italy in 2005. Using 1,000 kg (2,200 lb) of wool, it took more than a year to knit the basic shape and a further seven weeks to stuff and place the 61-m (200-ft) long sculpture. Wow!

Longest French Knitting

What is the longest you ever worked on a knitting project? Edward Peter Hannaford produced between 1989 and 2005 a piece of French knitting that measured 13.51 miles! What was the purpose? Well this effort won him the world record for French knitting!

Longest Finger Knitting

What is the largest project you have ever knit? What is the longest amount of time you've ever spent knitting a project? I have spent 4 years (working on and off) on an afghan. This is NOTHING compared to the record for the longest finger knitting held by Niklas Bernhard. I wonder how long it took him to complete 14,177 ft 9 in....

Worlds Largest Knit Hat

Imagine the head needed to fit this!

Irmgard Kargl holds the record for the largest knit hat, measuring 22'7" high and 59'4" in circumference. The hat was knit by a group, connecting squares of knit material together to form the hat. I wonder if this is available as a free knitting pattern....

Longest Knit Scarf

What is the longest scarf you've ever knit? Mine is probably around 6 or 7 feet long. The world record for longest knit scarf by an individual is 3,463.73 m or 2.15 MILES. I wouldn't feel too bad, it took Helge Johansen 23 years to complete this scarf.

You'd better start knitting if you want to beat this world record!

Are you curious about other knitting world records?

Longest Scarf Knit by a Team

Liz Rundle headed up a team supping the Children's Hospice in Wales to complete a scarf that measured 33.74 miles. Imagine how large a giant would have to be to wear the longest scarf knit by a team!

Knitting Simultaneously

Do you enjoy knitting in groups? Whenever I knit, I tend to be by myself, but I am open to joining a knitting group.

Well there are some large knitting groups out there. The world record for the largest amount of people knitting simultaneously in one location is 937. This record is currently held by Portland, Oregon, USA.

Do you know of any efforts to break any knitting world records? Let me know through the KPOTD submission form.

Largest Knit Tea Cozy

Rachel Barson holds the world record for the largest knit tea cozy. "The largest tea cosy was knitted by members of the public, Bupa care homes residents across the UK and resident care homes in Spain and New Zealand at Ashley Park nursing home in Guilford, UK, on 9 April 2009." - Guinness World Records Online

The previous attempt from 2008 was also quite large. See a picture of the largest knit tea cozy.

I sure hope that you're thirsty!

Knitting while running a marathon?!?

Susie Hewer holds the world record for the longest scarf knit while running a marathon at 1m 62 cm (5'2"). I don't think I could knit and walk at the same time! Check out a picture of Susie and her scarf in her blogger profile.

Susie has run over 20 marathons, and also holds the world record for the longest crochet chain knit while running a marathon (77.4m). What an accomplishment, Susie! Hopefully getting awarded "Knitting Project of the Day" will also rank somewhere in your heart....

Take some time and check out her knitting blog, Extreme Knitting Redhead.

Largest Knitting Needles

"The largest knitting needles measured 3.5 m (11 ft 5.8 in) long and had a diameter of 8 cm (3.15 in). Ingrid Wagner (UK) used the needles to knit a tension square of ten stitches by ten rows at the Metro Radio Arena, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK, on 10 March 2008." -Guinness World Records

And I thought it was hard to knit with size 50 knitting needles... Way to go Wagner! (See a photo of the completed swatch with the needles and the knitter at the Record page.)
