Learn to Crochet Kits
I love kits. I like having patterns and yarn all rolled up into one nice little package. It is fun when you already know the craft, but they also come in really handy when you want to learn something new. When I was ready to teach myself how to crochet, I found myself searching for different learn to crochet kits. Some kits come with videos, others with written instructions.
How did you learn how to crochet?

Crochet Disguises
Fooling facial recognition surveillance cameras with cunning and crocheting is a hilarious crochet project. I think the video is really well done, you definitely won't regret watching!

Xbox controller amigurumi
I love coming across fun amigurumi, and this crochet X-box controller is no exception! Look at the toggle knob...
Maybe someone needs to make a controller cozy that still allows you to access all of the buttons. Is anyone up for the challenge?

We've Got You Covered
Do you knit but have always wanted to crochet? The free eBook We’ve Got You Covered: 25 Crochet & Knit Throws from Red Heart Yarn has two lovely knitting patterns and 23 crochet patterns that is enough to tempt any knitter to convert. There are a couple of patterns (including the Stained Glass Throw) that have me tempted to cast on. (Is it still called casting on when you are talking about crochet?)

Lace Crochet Books
When I think of crochet, my mind immediately goes to lace. I am not sure if it because I watched my aunt craft a crochet lace tablecloth, or because of the crochet doilies that I have inherited from my female ancestors... but to me crochet and lace go hand in hand. I have only started learning how to crochet, but I love reading through crochet lace books. These books of delicate patterns inspire me to work harder to learn this craft. You should check them out!

A Granny A Day
Here at KPOTD, we like daily projects (or attempts at daily projects.) Hats off to Dana "Craftyminx" for trying to make a different crochet granny square for each day of the year. It appears as though she hasn't been able to keep up one a day, but she is still working to her goal of 365 unique granny squares.
Her photographs are beatuiful, and her orgnaization system will make it easy for someone else to locate the patterns.

Knit and Crochet Goes Cerebral
Starting today, a new exhibit Sticks, Hooks, and the Mobius: Knit and Crochet Goes Cerebral opens at the Williams Center for the Arts Gallery at Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania. This exhibit will run through February 5 and contains "science-based “geek” knit and crocheted art works, a yarnbombing, and a collaborative installation of indigenous plants."
I am happy to add that some of these science based "geek" knit projects featured in the gallery will be designs by ChemKnits (specifically some molecule knitting charts.) Keep an eye out for me!

QR Bombing
You see QR tags popping up all over the place, but I never thought I would see one made out of yarn! (I love making knitting charts, so I'm a bit bummed I didn't think of it first!)
From the Artist:

From the Artist:
"I wanted to break out of the basic black and white form of the QR code and try if I could somehow “hide” the code in the fabric, make it less obvious. Using more colours both in the background and in the figure itself seems to do that nicely. The only thing you have to keep in mind when using other or more colours than just black and white is to keep the contrast high enough. By the way, this is a perfect way to use leftover yarns – I didn’t have to buy any new materials for these pieces."

Crochet Settlers of Catan Board
Settlers of Catan
is one of my favorite board games. One of the best parts of the game is that the board is multiple pieces that changes each time you play. Of course, this can be challenging if the surface you want to play on isn't perfectly level.
How is this for a solution? A crochet settlers of catan board. Sure, this may work for travel purposes, and there are many other things that you need to play... but I love the concept!

Excerpt from Hawaii Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef Project:
"Aloha! The worldwide hyperbolic crochet (and knit) coral reef phenomenon is finally making its way to Hawai’i! Take some inspiration from the marine life around the Hawaiian Archipelago and knit or crochet some models of marine life to contribute to this community art project. The exhibition will take place from 4-28 June 2011 at the Hawai’i Craftsmen window at Marks Garage, a gallery in the Chinatown arts district of Honolulu."
